Type 2 diabetes in children has increased almost 10-fold in new Colorado data spanning 2002 through 2023. What happened, what should parents be watching for, and could we identify metabolic trouble before a child develops overt type 2 diabetes? New research from the Colorado Diabetes Registry reports that type 2 diabetes incidence among youth ages 10-19 increased from 2.37 cases per 100,000 in 2002 to 22.30 per 100,000 in 2023. The rate of increase also accelerated during the later years of the study. In this video, Dr. Ken Berry discusses childhood type 2 diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, fasting insulin, hemoglobin A1c, high-carbohydrate processed foods, fruit juice, pediatric insulin reference values, and practical steps parents can discuss with their child's clinician. Topics include: type 2 diabetes in children and teenagers; youth-onset type 2 diabetes trends; fasting insulin levels in children by age; A1c testing in children; hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance; processed carbohydrates and sugary drinks; fruit juice recommendations for children; pediatric diabetes screening; acanthosis nigricans; Proper Human Diet for families; and how parents can recognize metabolic risk earlier. Pediatric fasting insulin is age-dependent. Published healthy reference populations show fasting insulin rising through childhood and especially around puberty. Links to the underlying pediatric insulin studies are below so parents and clinicians can review the actual data rather than relying on a single adult reference range.
